The images in this little book are the products of chance combinations drawn from a small repertoire of semiotic objects-letterforms, diacritics, numerals, photographs and coloured shapes. Their content-if such a word is meaningful in this context-is of less significance than the result of their combination.
The methodology to achieve this was a combination of processes-including the use of custom-made software-but in particular, human intervention. Namely, the overseeing of an entire process of quality control and decisions computers simply cannot and perhaps should not make.
The book concludes with an essay that simultaneously traces Chance Would Be A Fine Thing’s creative process and the logic behind it. In doing so, it moves beyond the poles of pessimism and over-optimism typical of graphic design’s response to AI, highlighting instead the creative potential of ludic, aleatoric and human encounters between designers and their technologies.
